Fiber Optic Sensing Association Names Technology Committee
Industry experts to guide FOSA technical work
WASHINGTON DC - June 29, 2017 - The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) today announced the creation of a Technology Committee consisting of thirteen industry experts. As an initial activity, the committee will address fiber sensing installation considerations at a high level.
Technology Committee members are Chris Minto of OptaSense (Chairman), Mike Hines of OFS (Board Liaison), Dana Dutoit of AFL, Brian Borkowski of Asymmetric Technologies, Bruce Chow of Corning, Kelvin Self of Ditch Witch, Scott Gardner of Dura-Line, George Palmer of Fotech Solutions, Fabian Kleinpötzl of Frauscher Sensor Technology USA, Inc., Wieland Hill of LIOS Technology, Etienne Rochat of Omnisens, Gordon Youle of OZ Optics, and Paul Baird of Prysmian Group.
FOSA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the use of distributed and quasi-distributed fiber optic sensing. Fiber optic sensing uses laser interrogation of fiber optic cable to remotely and instantaneously detect pipeline leaks, vehicle traffic, human traffic, digging activity, seismic activity, unsafe temperatures, loss of structural integrity, and other conditions and activities.
Serving as Chairman of the Technology Committee will be Dr. Chris Minto of OptaSense. A PhD physicist with over 20 years’ experience in acoustic sensing, Minto has overseen product development and deployment for OptaSense from the company’s founding in 2008.
“It will be an honor to chair a committee of such distinguished industry experts,” Minto said. “Our goal will be to enhance the understanding and utilization of fiber optic sensing in the real world through, for example, common installation considerations for engineering and construction firms starting the deployment process.”
Mike Hines, Market Manager, Industrial Sensing at OFS, will serve as the FOSA Board’s Liaison to the Technology Committee.
“This committee represents some of the world’s greatest expertise in fiber optic sensing for protection of pipelines, power lines, railways, international borders, smart roads, and critical facilities,” Hines said. “Their insights will be invaluable as FOSA educates industry, government and the public on the benefits of fiber optic sensing.”
Mark Uncapher, FOSA Director, will have operational responsibility for the Committee, which will hold its initial meeting in July.
