FOSA Presents 2021 Innovation and Project Awards to Fotech, HiFi, and OptaSense

Fiber Optic Sensing Association Presents 2021 Innovation and Project Awards to Fotech, HiFi, and OptaSense

WASHINGTON, DC – February 8, 2022 – The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) announced the three winners of its first Innovation and Project Awards, Fotech, Hifi, and Optasense. The award’s presentation to the honorees was made in Washington at the association’s annual member meeting.

  • Representing one of the Project Awards for 2021, Fotech’s Air Quality Simulation project uses a novel application for fiber optic sensing. The project developed a comprehensive traffic simulation model using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) at Cellarhead Crossroads, Staffordshire in the United Kingdom.
  • Representing one of the Project Awards for 2021, Hifi’s engagement with the Trans Mountain Expansion Project provides high fidelity distributed sensing (HDS) along with the twinning of the existing 750-mile-long oil pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia, Canada. The new pipeline will have distributed fiber sensing architecture to monitor for leaks and integrity risks to the pipeline and surveillance capability for both the existing and new pipeline. The combined surveillance capability for both the existing and new pipeline will be the world’s longest fully distributed pipeline-based fiber optic sensing deployment.
  • OptaSense’s development of static strain and temperature sensing in a Rayleigh backscatter-based system won the Innovation Award 2021. This development extends the reach of current Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) devices to Strain and Temperature; bringing Rayleigh-based versions of Distributed Temperature (RDTS) and Strain sensing (RDSS) all to a single device. This provides a new paradigm in extending and improving the application range of DAS systems.

ABOUT THE FIBER OPTIC SENSING ASSOCIATION.
FOSA is a non-profit organization created in Washington DC in 2017 with the mission of educating industry, government, and the public on the benefits of fiber optic sensing. Through webinars, videos, white papers, public presentations, and public policy advocacy, the organization provides information on the use of fiber optic sensing to secure critical facilities, enhance public safety and protect the environment.
