    All-day member meeting at TU Graz
    Most Austrian hotels include breakfast so we will have coffee and tea available at the meeting and assume you will eat breakfast at your hotel; lunch will be provided during the day; dinner in the evening at the top of castle hill is included.

    8:00am meet at the university (exact location will be provided to attendees) to leave for the Tunnel Tour, returning mid-afternoon to Graz. The Tunnel Tour is a sensing adventure not to miss; a Graz led tour of the Tunnel research center in a spacious, antique heavy-load mining vehicle

Note: All FOSA Members, regardless of membership tier, can invite 1 guest (considering joining FOSA) for a nominal fee of $300 – this fee can be used as credit toward new FOSA membership in 2024.

     Evening cocktail hour in the historic city of Graz at Bar Amouro
  • Wednesday, June 5
    All-day member meeting at TU Graz starts at 9am and is expected to go until 5pm. Most Austrian hotels include breakfast so we will have coffee and tea available at the meeting and assume you will eat breakfast at your hotel; lunch will be provided during the day. Dinner in the evening at the top of castle hill in the Skybar of the Schlossberg Restaurant is included. Dinner starts at 7pm. There will be a couple different designated meeting points where attendees can gather at 6:30pm to travel together to dinner.

Meeting FAQs

1.Do you recommend flying into Vienna and taking the train to Graz or flying into Graz?
It is more convenient to fly directly to Graz, however, if there are no suitable flight connections to Graz, Vienna is a great option. There are train connections every hour, either direct or with one change at Vienna main station. The travel time with the train from Vienna Airport to Graz Main Station is 3 hours. Tickets can be bought online at https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/ticket, via the Oebb Tickets app or at the ticket machine at the airport. The one-way ticket not bounded to a specific train is about 48 €. Tickets linked to a specific train (“Sparschiene”) are cheaper. Below are the time schedules for both directions.

2.Is there an agenda for the meeting?
The preliminary agenda appears below, a more detailed agenda will be emailed to attendees.

  • Tuesday, June 4, evening cocktail hour 7PM-9PM in the historic city of Graz – we will let you know the location
  • Wednesday, June 5, all-day member meeting at TU Graz starting at 9AM includes keynote presentations by leading experts from universities and research centers, coffee in the morning will be provided, we assume you will have breakfast at your hotel, lunch is provided at the university; evening dinner provided at the top of castle hill – we will let you know the dinner location
  • Thursday, June 6, morning and early afternoon, a sensing adventure not to miss – Graz led tour of the Tunnel research center in a spacious, antique heavy-load mining vehicle; this excursion leaves the university at 8AM so please have your breakfast and coffee at your hotel, a box lunch will be provided to you on the tour

3.My flight leaves Thursday, can I still attend the tunnel tour?
If you are flying out from Graz Thursday

Yes, you can still attend the tunnel tour if your flight leaves Thursday late afternoon/evening. The excursion is scheduled so that the following planes from Graz can be used, the tunnel Bus can stop by the airport on the return trip from the tunnel research center:
16:35: Graz – Vienna
16:45: Graz – Munich
17:50: Graz – Hamburg
18:33: Graz – Frankfurt
20:10: Graz – Duesseldorf
If you need to make the 14:55 flight from Graz to Frankfurt, you will skip the mining truck ride and someone will take you to the airport.

If you are traveling to Vienna Thursday
For the return trip it is possible for you to get off the tunnel excursion Bus in Leoben and take the connection Leoben 15:33 – Vienna Airport 17:57.

4.Where exactly at TU Graz will the meeting be held?
The meeting will be held at Graz University of Technology, Steyrergasse 30, 8010 Graz, Ground floor, Seminar room AE02.

5.How far is the tunnel center from TU Graz? How far is the ride to it?
The tunnel center is 80 km north of Graz. The ride is about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

6.Is it cold in the tunnel, do I need to bring a warm jacket for the tour?
Standard clothing, a sweater/jumper and a light jacket should be fine.

7.Is there a particular type of clothing I should wear on the tunnel tour?
Sport shoes and jeans are appropriate clothing on the tunnel tour.

8.Is there a waiver I need to fill in to go on the tour?
Yes, you will need to fill in a there is a waiver to go on the tunnel tour and this will be distributed to those attending closer to the tour date.

9.Is there a registration deadline?
Yes, the registration deadline is May 15.
